Toyota through its subsidiary Scion which largely produces small cars for the North American market needed a sporty Scion for the American market to replace the discontinued Scion xD.
Instead of building one from scratch, they went overseas and took the Toyota Auris hatchback which sells in the European market and rebranded it to a new Scion going by the name 2016 Scion iM.
2016 Scion iM Exterior
The exterior look is sporty. This car enters a market already dominated by the likes of Mazda 3, Volkswagen Golf and Ford Focus and therefore needed to offer a body close to its rivals if not better. The 5-door hatchback measures 170.5-inches long, 69.3 inches wide with a height of 55.3 inches .Its shape creates a forward motion feeling.
At the front, the 2016 Scion iM features a piano black themed grille, large air intakes and vertically placed fog lights. The exterior also features heated side-view mirrors which fold at the push of a button as well as flared fenders. The vehicle will run on 17-inch alloy wheels which complement its sporty appearance.
2016 Scion iM Interior
The interior styling of this hatchback is adopted form that of Toyota Corolla. To start with, like the majority of other Scion brands, the vehicle is offered in a single trim which packages plenty of features as standard.
The cabin will accommodate four passengers comfortably but can still squeeze a third passenger on the rear seats to hold five. The seats are covered in quality cloth and the front features sports seats with a height adjustable driver’s seat. Tall passengers will find the rear seat uncomfortable since it comes short on headroom. The rear seat however has a split 60/40 capability and folds flat to allow expansion of the cargo space.
The dashboard and the steering wheel are wrapped in leather but the steering wheel is not hooked up with a telescopic function as we had hoped. The front cabin looks modern with a mix of piano black trim and cream-colored accenting. The vehicle features as standard an audio system with a 7-inch color display, dual-zone climate control, voice recognition, Bluetooth and USB connectivity. It is also features a number of cup holders where passengers can store their refreshments.
