The Toyota Tacoma is a truck built for real reliability in any terrain. According to Toyota, the new pickup will be more powerful than the outgoing model. The vehicle’s structure is built using high-strength steel. As such, the truck will have a lighter curb weight which will translate to better fuel economy.

At the front, the Tacoma features a hexagonal grille with chrome touches. Flanking the grille are LED headlights and fog lights which have been well integrated. The rear of the cab features an integrated spoiler which improves its aerodynamics. The hood, front and rear bumpers as well as the fenders have also been redesigned to offer improved aerodynamics.

Toyota has also featured special insulation which is placed under the wheel arches. This insulation helps reduce noise in the cabin. The vehicle will ride on large wheels probably 18-inch wheels for lower trims and 20-inch for the higher trims. The wheels will be wrapped in all-terrain tires.

Toyota has hooked the interior of the truck with a delicate balance of comfort and safety features.  The Tacoma will be offered in 5 trim levels which are the base SR, TRD Sport, mid trims SR5 and Limited and the top trim TRD-Off-Road. All trims will be offered in both 4×4 and 4×2 configurations.

The cabin is spacious enough and accommodates five passengers with plenty of head, hip and leg room. The truck is designed to haul people comfortably and safely. It features leather upholstered seats that are electronically adjustable. The truck is equipped with the automaker’s CRAWL which improves its maneuverability.

The driver is able to select different types of driving modes depending on the terrain you are on whether sandy, snowy, muddy or in an asphalt terrain. For entertainment, the vehicle comes with an updated acoustic audio system. It also comes with a large touch-screen display and a more functional instrument panel.

New for 2017 is wireless charging which integrates both Apple and Android Smartphone. There will also be USB ports, Bluetooth connectivity, voice commands, and hands-free calling.  The vehicle will also be equipped with a back up camera, air conditioning, blind spot monitoring, keyless entry, cross traffic warning and power moon-roof. Higher trims will feature extra functions.

Engine Specs

According to rumors, the 2017 Toyota Tacoma will feature 3 engine variants, two petrol engines and a diesel engine. The first petrol engine is a 2.7 L, 4-cylinder unit which is rated at 160 hp and 180 lb-ft of torque. The second petrol engine is a 3.5 L, V6 engine capable of producing 280 hp.

According to rumors, the likely diesel engine will be a 5.0 L unit. However, details on its power output are yet to be availed. All drive-trains will be paired to a 6-speed automatic transmission system integrated with a Start/Stop system.

The new truck will have a better fuel economy and is estimated to return 19 mpg in city and 25 mpg on highway drives.

Price and release date

The model is in its final development phase and rumor has it that a production model will make its debut in Detroit Auto Show before arriving in dealer showrooms in the second half of next year. As for the price, the Tacoma will have a friendly price of between $ 18,000 and $31,000 MSRP.

Competition

Competition at this level is stiff and Toyota has to ensure their model gets the best trimmings. Main competitors in this high quality and highly functional pickup market segment are the likes of GMC Canyon, Nissan Frontier and Chevrolet Colorado.
