Since its maiden debut in the 1990s, the Lexus RX which used to go by the name RX300 has been the most successful line of Lexus. It actually accounts for around 28% of the automaker’s sales and last year the line sold over 100,000 units.
The model was so dominant last year that it nearly outsell BMW’s entire lineup of SUVs. In a bid to retain and strengthen its control of the segment even further, Lexus designers have carefully designed a new model meant to keep old customers satisfied as well as attract new ones.
It is offered in 4 flavors i.e. RX 350 which is the base, RX 350 F Sport, RX 450 h hybrid and RX 450 h F Sport which is new for 2016.
2016 Lexus RX Exterior
The 2016 Lexus RX stands proud at 192.5-inches long, 74.6-inches wide and 66.5-inches tall. It has a wheelbase of 109.8-inches. The exterior design is a slight but daring departure from what we are used to. There are hardly any flat surfaces on the vehicle, its sides has been cut and creased. The first thing that catches the eye is its new massive spindle grille spotting a chrome finish. The grille is flanked by slit-like LED headlights and arrow-shaped fog lights housings.
The vehicle also features LED running lights. On the sides, the wheel wells have dark matte-trim lips and combine with blacked-out lower-body trim for a rugged appearance than ever before. Higher on the sides is a series of lines. The vehicle also spots a new floating roof (blacked out space in the C-pillar area) that swoops down in a bold manner. The rear styling is more conservative though it features LED taillights and a tailgate that can be opened by hand or elbow gestures. It’s opened by hovering one’s hand or elbow over the Lexus emblem.
The vehicle will ride on standard 18-inch wheels but there is an option for 20-inch wheels. Those who want to stand out from the rest can opt for the set of 20-inch wheels with colored chrome inserts in titanium, pearl white, copper or black. The wheels are wrapped in Michelin Premier LTX tires with hidden grooves which open up as the tires age which extends the life of the tires.
2016 Lexus RX Interior
When you open the door of the RX, only a single word pops out of your mouth “wow!” .The interior design and upholstery is just stunning. The car is not able to sell over 100,000 units every year for no apparent reason; it just provides value for money. The dashboard is simple and clean while the cockpit is welcoming.
The interior has a number of color options which include four colors of leather and a dark red trim which is exclusive for the F Sport. The interior also features 5 trim materials including real wood veneer which makes it lovely. Its seats are upholstered in semi-aniline leather and feature power lower cushion lengtheners making them very comfortable. The front seats are 10-way power adjustable and can be further upgraded with the Luxury Package.
Gauges on the base model are centrally placed for easy reading. The base model features a non-branded, 12-speaker audio system with an option for a premium Mark Levinson audio system. The vehicle also comes with a 12.3-inch infotainment display mounted at the top of the dash. The vehicle also features a Remote Touch Interface with the automaker’s trademark joystick but it’s not as easy to access as the BMW’s iDrive or Cadillac’s CUE. Lexus though has miscalculated the importance of Wi-Fi connectivity and Android Auto in today’s automobile industry which we hope they will include in their next series if they want attention of young buyers.
The automaker is also serious about the vehicle’s safety and has hooked up the vehicle with 10 airbags and a full package of driver aides and parking assist systems.
Engine Specs and Performance
Under the hood of the RX 350 will still be a 3.5 L, V6 which has been hooked up with direct injection to bump up output to 295 hp and 267 lb-ft of torque up from 270 lb-ft of torque and 248 lb-ft of torque.
The new 2016 Lexus RX 350 will be paired with an 8-speed automatic transmission system previously a preserve for the F Sport. The model will be offered in both AWD and FWD modes. The vehicle accelerates from 0-60 mph in 7.9 seconds for AWD models.
A Greener option, 2016 Lexus RX Hybrid
If you want to experience the Lexus RX and still help Mother Nature, well, the new hybrid RX 450 h has been improved to save more gas .Its drive-train features a 3.5 L, V6 engine that runs the Atkinson cycle. It is paired with 3 motors to produce 308 hp. Though it doesn’t produce more power than the 350 V6 it is more fuel economical at 30 mpg city and 28 mpg highway when paired with AWD.
The gasoline-only RX 350 on the other hand has a rating of 19 mpg city and 26 mpg on highway. Due to the hybrid drive-train, its weight increases by 400-lb but it’s still able to move from 0-60 mph as fast as its gasoline sister RX 350. The hybrid has a 20 miles range on electric power only at speeds below 25 mph.
Price and release date
The 2016 Lexus RX crossover will arrive in dealer showrooms in November this year. According to the automaker, the base price will be under $ 45,000 though Lexus is yet to offer specific details on its pricing.
