For quite some time we had been wondering why Toyota never produced a hybrid power-train for the Toyota RAV4. However, the automaker seems to have heard the cries of many fans out there wishing the same.
During this year’s New York International Auto Show, the Japanese auto maker unveiled the production model of the 2016 Toyota RAV4 hybrid SUV set to hit dealer showrooms later this fall. During the unveiling, Toyota said that this ‘greener’ variant will be quicker and more powerful than its conventional sister.
2016 Toyota RAV4 Hybrid Exterior
Overall, the new RAV4 Hybrid has received a refreshed exterior styling that is sportier, dynamic and with immense aerodynamic performance compared to the previous conventional model.
The vehicle features LED headlights, running lights and taillights and a redesigned grille. At the rear, the bumper has been redesigned as well as the tailgate. The SUV will also feature new front and rear skid plate garnishes and a shark-fin antenna. The vehicle will be offered in a choice of 17-inch or 18-inch alloy wheels.
The five-door SUV will be offered in 6 exterior color options i.e. Classic Silver Metallic, Super White, Magnetic Gray Metallic, Black Sand Pearl, Blizzard Pearl and Blue which is a new addition.
2016 Toyota RAV4 Hybrid Interior
Sliding inside of the new RAV4, you will be met with a roomy interior featuring excellent styling. It will accommodate five passengers in its comfortable seats upholstered in leather. It has a sufficient cargo capacity which can be extended by folding the rear seats.
Though the conventional 2016 RAV4 will be offered in four trim levels which are XE, XLE, Limited and the latest addition SE trim, the hybrid model will only be offered in XLE and Limited trim levels. The interior will feature new premium touches and various additions and upgrade on its detailing.
The 2016 Toyota RAV4 Hybrid SUV features a 7.0-inch touch-screen which displays information about the Display Audio sound system and a smaller 4.2-inch multi-information display in the modified gauge cluster. There additional front USB ports, a 12 V power supply at the rear and redesigned cup-holders and a dedicated sunglasses holder. It also features front and rear parking sonar, SiriusXM radio in both trims. The vehicle also comes with a 360-degree Bird’s Eye View Monitor. For convenience, the RAV4 Hybrid comes with keyless access system and Homelink garage door opener.
Safety wise, Toyota the RAV4 Hybrid will offer the new Toyota Safety Sense system. The system comes with a Pre-Collision system, Lane Departure Alert, Dynamic Radar Cruise Control, Forward Collision warning as well as Automatic High Beams.
Engine Specs and Performance
Under the hood of the 2016 Toyota RAV4 Hybrid there will be a 2.5 L inline-four engine similar to the one on the conventional RAV4. The automaker has not made public details on its output but Toyota disclosed that the hybrid engine will have more horsepower than the non-hybrid version which has a 176 hp rating. This engine is paired with a ECVT transmission system and all models will feature Toyota’s Electronic On-Demand All-Wheel-Drive System with intelligence (AWD-i).
The power-train features a separate motor placed at the rear axle which applies torque instantly and automatically to the rear wheels in case additional traction is required. This hybrid system is similar to the one on the Lexus NX 300h which is based on the RAV4 platform.
The automaker did not reveal details on its fuel EPA ratings but we expect them to fall around those of the Lexus NX 300h which is rated at 33 mpg on city drives and 30 mpg on highway drives. We will inform you more when the automaker reveals additional information about this hybrid SUV.
Price and release date
As said earlier, the automaker announced during the New York Auto Show that the small hybrid SUV will be released to dealer showrooms this fall. However, Toyota didn’t release any details about its price but rumor has it that the hybrid will have a base (MSRP) price of $ 26,125 for the XLE trim level and $ 29,335 for the Limited trim level.
