2018 Toyota Supra

What we know about the new 2018 Toyota Supra? After a long hiatus, Toyota is set to revive the enthusiast-popular Supra nametag.  Indication that the automaker was considering a Supra successor started with the launch of the FT-HS concept way back in 2007. In 2014, Toyota released another concept which was an upgrade of the FT-HS concept. The new concept dubbed the FT-1 concept confirmed that Toyota was seriously considering a Supra successor.

Around the same time, BMW was also rumored to be considering a Z4 successor, so when a rumor sufficed that the two automakers had partnered to produce a sports car; it became clear that Toyota was seriously considering producing a Supra successor.

2018 Toyota Supra Exterior

Toyota and BMW have both managed to keep the production details of the two models a secret such that only the staff members who are directly involved in the project are aware of the models development.

According to credible reports, BMW will develop the chassis which will be shared by the two cars. The chassis is believed to be based on a “frame-based” format. This format will allow both automakers to produce models that look different from each other.

Though no photos of the models have been released as of this writing, we understand that their exterior bodies will use a lot of carbon fiber and aluminum to make them as light as possible.

We believe the new Supra will adopt its exterior styling cues from the FT-1. The 2018 Toyota Supra will be almost the same size as the Porsche 911 as the Supra is rumored to extend 117 inches long with a width of 72 inches and a height of 52 inches.

2018 Toyota Supra Interior

The interior of the 2018 Toyota Supra is a complete mystery as of this writing. However, the model will most likely adopt cues from the FT-1 concept. Further, considering the FT-1 concept was released in 2014 much has changed in the automobile industry so the cabin will be upgraded to reflect the latest technologies. Toyota will strive to offer a good blend of luxury and convenience in the cabin.

Engine Specs and performance

According to reports, the Supra will be powered by two engines, a conventional and a hybrid engine.  The conventional engine will be provided by BMW. It is a 3.0 L, 6-cylinder mill. The engine is capable of producing 335 horses and 331 lb-ft of torque. This will be the base engine for the 2018 Toyota Supra.

However, BMW will use a less powerful engine for their base Z5 models. The more potent engine will be the hybrid drive-train which will feature the 3.0 L, 6-cylinder engine and a Toyota-supplied electric motor and lithium-ion battery pack. This plug-in drive-train will be capable of producing 473 hp.

Price and release date

The Supra will be released sometimes next year as a 2018 model.  Before it hits dealer showrooms, the 2018 Toyota Supra will first be showcased at an international motor show in the first quarter of next year. A starting price of $50,000 is likely for the sports car.

The 2016 Acura NSX will be the 2018 Toyota Supra’s biggest rival.  However, unlike the Supra, the NSX is targeted to buyers willing to spend in excess of $100,000 on a two-seater.
