Although it still enjoys a genuine reputation of reliability and resale value common with Toyota models, the Tundra pickup truck is losing its former glory to newer rivals such as the Chevrolet Silverado, Nissan Titan and Ford F-150. The newer trucks look more stylish and offer more power. However, although it cannot claim to be the best in its segment in any category, it has the capability to handle the jobs it is meant to. One of the models in the Tundra lineup that is a darling of many buyers is the 2018 Toyota Tundra Crew Max Limited trim. Unlike the base models, the Limited trim comes with a more powerful V-8 mill as well as a better cabin styling. This review focuses on the Crew Max Limited trim of the Toyota Tundra.
2018 Toyota Tundra Crew Max Limited Exterior
Crew Max Limited models have a wheelbase of 145.7 inches and a height of 76.2 inches. All crew cab models of the Tundra come with a short bed that measures 66.7 inches. The Crew Max Limited features a bigger iteration of the Toyota grille. The model also features a lockable tailgate that adjusts automatically to avert tailgate slam.
The model also features a chrome trim on door handles and side mirrors. A sun/moon-roof, bed Liner and Bed Tonneau Cover and Running Boards are optional. The pickup truck rides on 20-inch aluminum wheels wrapped in All-Terrain wheels. The automaker offers a tire pressure monitoring system to ensure you don’t venture into the extreme off-roads with deflated tires.
The truck is offered with a trailer hitch receiver; when properly equipped, the Crew Max Limited can pull a trailer weighing as much as 8,900 lbs.
The cabin of the 2018 Toyota Tundra Crew Max Limited accommodates five passengers. Toyota has equipped the model with bucket seats at the front. Both the driver and the front passenger seats are powered and heated but the driver’s seat has lumbar support. The rear, on the other hand, has a pass-through bench seat. All seats are wrapped in leather. The Tundra also features an adjustable steering wheel that is also wrapped in leather. Other features include power windows, privacy glass and rear defrost.
There is a wood-grain trim that makes the cabin look quite attractive for a pickup truck of its class.
The Limited trim like other Tundras has a wide dash that is also symmetrical. The model features a 6.1-inch touch-screen infotainment system integrated with an AM/FM/CD player, MP3 player, Satellite radio, Bluetooth connectivity and auxiliary inputs. It also features a multi-zone climate control and a premium audio system. It also features a navigation system and a universal garage door opener.
For safety, Toyota offers the Toyota Safety Sense (TSS) system as standard; it features traction control, stability control and EBS. Other safety features include child safety locks, tow hooks and a package of airbags. Blind spot monitoring and cross-traffic alert are optional.
Engine and performance
The 2018 Toyota Tundra Crew Max Limited is powered by a 5.7 L, V-8 that produces 381 hp and 401 lb-ft of torque. The engine mates to a 6-speed automatic gearbox. Although rivals come with 8- as well as 10-speed transmission units, the 6-speed system gets the job done right. The model is offered in an AWD system that features a two-speed transfer case. The V-8 offers an exhaust note similar to that of a muscle car. The V-8 engine is very thirsty; it is EPA rated at 13 mpg in the city, 17 mpg on the highway and 15 mpg on combined drives.
Price and release date
All Tundra models are currently available at Toyota dealerships. In terms of price, the Crew Max Limited slots in the middle of the Tundra lineup. The truck has a starting price of $46,595 before options.
