The 2018 Toyota Yaris iA is set to hit dealerships next month. This is the sedan version of the Yaris hatchback. However, despite sharing names, the sedan shares little if anything else with the hatchback. The Yaris iA is actually one of the few models that survived after the discontinuation of the Scion brand. It was previously known as the Scion iA. In fact, the Yaris iA is a rebadged Mazda 2 sedan. This is because of the Yaris iA, is one of the Toyota models currently being produced under a joint venture between Toyota and Mazda. The sedan’s engine and infotainment system mirror those of the new CX-3. The iA will carry over unchanged from the 2017 version. The Yaris iA sedan offers value to customers on budget; the model is very reliable and offers a high level of functionality and to some extent, it is also fun to drive.
Exterior and Interior styling
Were it not for the Toyota-like snout, many people would not tell that the Yari iA is actually a Toyota. Standing side by side with the Yaris hatchback you would never tell that the two models share a nametag as they are completely different, unlike other models where the sedan and the hatchback almost look identical at least at the front. Most of the other exterior features make the model look more of a Mazda than a Toyota model. In other parts of the world, the Yaris iA is actually rebadged and sold as a Mazda 2 sedan. The model looks somewhat sporty thanks to the extra Mazda touches. The sedan rides on 16-inch alloy wheels. Since it underwent a more extensive redesign for the 2017 model year, the Yari iA carries over to 2018 without any major changes.
Inside, Toyota (or is it Mazda?) has managed to hook up the sedan with a nice cabin considering the model’s price. However, while the front passengers have sufficient legroom, the rear is more camped. The model offers a cargo space of only 13.5 cubic feet which can, however, be expanded by folding the rear seats which have a 60/40 split-folding functionality.
The Yaris iA sedan also features a 7.0-inch infotainment screen that is mounted on top of the dash. The system integrates AM/FM/HD Radio, hands-free phone, music streaming via Bluetooth and a host of other technologies. The model also features as standard Push Button Start as well as a user-friendly key fob that enables easy locking and unlocking of the sedan’s doors as well as the opening of the trunk-lid.
For safety, the sedan features several safety systems as standard such as automatic high beams, lane departure alert, pre-collision warning, traction control, dynamic stability control and electronic brake-force distribution systems.
2018 Toyota Yaris iA Engine and performance
The 2018 Toyota Yaris iA carries over with the same engine like the outgoing model, a 1.5 L, inline-4 good for 106 hp. The engine is paired with a 6-speed manual/automatic transmission system. Models with the 6-speed automatic gearbox are a little fun to drive despite the tight budget. The engine returns 32 mpg in city, 40 mpg on highway and 35 mpg on combined drives for models with an automatic gearbox while manual Yaris iA models return 30 mpg in city, 39 mpg on highway and 34 mpg on combined drives; this means you won’t need to spend much on gas running various errand in and out of town.
Pricing and Release date
The 2018 Toyota Yaris iA will arrive in dealerships starting next month (October). The sedan has an MSRP of $16,845 for models with a manual transmission. Models with automatic transmission attract an extra $1,100 pushing the price to $17,945. The Toyota Yaris iA slots below the popular Toyota Corolla which has an MSRP of $19,365.
